My quick sketch charcoal drawings help me capture that elusive moment in time for children of all ages and adults. I tell my clients they can move around a little and I've found these relaxed sittings help bring out their personalities. In my paintings, I try to tell a bigger story which can mean incorporating a favorite toy, color or activity. Although I prefer to work from life, I use reference photos as needed.  For paintings, I try to schedule a final sitting with the client ... the time spent fine-tuning the likeness makes all the difference.

For "Phases of Luke," I included elements that reflect the activity and movement of a busy three-year-old along with the things he loves -- tools and Curious George. To learn more about my working methods, see below.

These are charcoal sketches I did in preparation for an oil portrait of two sisters. I took photos of the girls then used the pictures as reference for the charcoal sketches. I took the liberty of adding elements that weren't in the picture to create better compositions.
